Happiness or Joy

There is a song that goes “Don’t worry, be happy.”  Makes it sound so easy. The word happiness comes from an old English word which means chance. We think that if everything goes right we will be happy.  But what happens when things do not go right? We become unhappy or dissatisfied with our situation, even to the point of despair.  Happiness is temporary; true joy is permanent and settled.

The Psalmist wrote, “In thy presence is fullness of joy.” The Bible is one of the most joy filled books ever written.  We find that joy isn’t an emotion, rather it is an attitude.  We can choose to be joyful regardless of our circumstance.  Being a faithful follower of Christ’s teachings brings an inner joy that is real and resilient – regardless of economic indicators, unrest in government, or even disease or death.

When you bask in God’s love, you experience a wellspring of joy bubbling up in your heart. No one or nothing can ever take that away from you!

“That my joy may be in you.”
